Carnival Season Ep.1: Hike+Fasnacht in Engen
Following the Luzern festival of lights and Claire Huangci's concert in Schaffhausen, are you ready for some entertaining Carnival events?
As we have never witnessed a Carnival in the Hegau/Bodensee region yet, let's kick off the season by heading to the town of Engen, whose Fasnacht tradition dates back to the 17th century and whose organisation committee celebrate Protected content this year. The rich program can be viewed at Protected content and features some sort of Carnival tree hoisting on Saturday evening and a big parade on Sunday afternoon.
Let's pick Sunday and combine a hike with the Carnival, by walking up to the top of the Hohenhewen volcanic hill (which, according to the legend, is also the den of the devil that lurks behind this Carnival) and heading to Engen afterwards.
Hike takes about 2,5 hours and is rated as easy/medium. The Hohenhewen is the 4th volcanic hill we visit in Hegau (we previously hiked on the Hohentwiel, Rosenegg and Magdeberg ) and the tallest one, with Protected content of elevation gain.
The route is similar to
Protected content , but we'll start from Welschingen-Neuhausen train station to make it a bit shorter.
By 13:00/13:30 we'll be in Engen, in time for the 13:30 parade.
