Employment in Zagreb

Local Economy

The most important industries in Zagreb are electrical production, pharmaceuticals, and food and drink processing.

Agrokor, INA, and Hrvatski Telekom are all leaders in retail, oil, and telecommunications respectively. They also have their headquarters in the center of Zagreb. This contributes to a higher average earning per month compared to the rest of Croatia, averaging in at around 30,000 USD per capita, compared to the 16,000 USD average in the rest of the country.

The average monthly salary is around 7,000 HRK, which equates to around 900 EUR. In 2013, 9.5% of work force in Zagreb were classed as being unemployed, making it a relatively good place to find work in comparison to neighboring cities.

Job Hunting in Zagreb

You may be transferring to a job in your home country through an international company, or just hoping to land yourself a fantastic first job abroad. No matter what you’re looking for, you are sure to find a variation of job opportunities in Zagreb.

There are quite a few popular job sites in Croatia. MojPosao is a great place to get started, and general job sites such as glassdoor and Career Jet are also a popular with expats looking for work in Zagreb.

If searching for jobs in a traditional manner is more to your taste, there is a selection of big newspapers that show local jobs, such as for example  Večernji List (website in Croatian).

Companies in Croatia generally prefer to employ expats with a good, solid skillset rather than generalized skills. It is also courteous to know some basic Croatian. So, if you are an expat hoping to teach English, your employer and the students/staff will expect a certain degree of literacy.

Income Taxation in Zagreb

The tax threshold is quite high in Croatia, and tax residents are usually taxed on their worldwide income. Expatriates that have lived and worked in Zagreb for over 183 days in a tax year are classed as residents, and should expect the following tax thresholds:

  • 25% = 36,000–81,000 HRK
  • 35% = 81,000–252,000 HRK
