Employment in Yaoundé

Local Economy

The country’s oil reserves and favorable agricultural conditions have given Cameroon one of the best primary commodity markets in Sub-Saharan Africa.

With its steady temperatures, long rainy season, and position on top of 7 hills, Yaoundé is the county’s industrial center for tobacco, lumber and dairy products. The city also has centers that distribute such products as sugar and coffee throughout the region.

As the capital and a major industrial center, Yaoundé has the best standard of living in Cameroon, and there you can find the best research centers, health care services, restaurants and recreation centers in the country.

Work Permits for Yaoundé

It is advisable to apply for a work permit well before moving to Yaoundé, as according to the Cameroonian Embassy, the process can take up to two months. Along with it, you will need a residence permit as well, and usually your employer will apply for it on your behalf.

Before that your new employer is required to write a letter that states the nature of your job to the Ministry of Labor, and they will have to approve your employment contract. You also need to purchase a return ticket for proof that you are leaving the country once your contract with your employer expires.

Job Hunting in Yaoundé

Due to visa reasons, expatriates should have employment secured before entering the country. Skilled expats are needed in teaching and healthcare sectors. As the capital of the country, Yaoundé also has a thriving tourism industry and it is possible for expats to find employment in hotels and tour companies. International companies in the city include Axa Assurances, British American Tobacco, Camoa, Colgate Palmolive and Pricewaterhousecoopers.

It is also possible for expats to find work while they are in the country, and by far the best method is by word of mouth. There are job agencies and some job websites, but in Cameroon it is also normal to use your social networks to find employment. The two official languages are French and English, and if you speak both, you have a good chance to find some great job opportunities.
