Living in Remscheid

Remscheid is a city in the south side of the German Ruhr area. Almost completely destroyed in World War Two, the city is fairly modern looking despite its rich history stretching back to the 12th century. The city is home to both the first drinking water dam built in Germany, and the highest train bridge in the country. The latter stretches over the city in quite a grand fashion and is a favorite picture motif for tourists. Speaking of large things, the Burg Castle in nearby Solingen is the largest reconstructed castle in the area and definitively a trip worth taking for any expat in Remscheid. Remscheid itself is surrounded by green and rolling hill ranges, and within the city limits there is a high concentration of cultural attractions such as concert halls, theaters, and museums. Remscheid is also a great area to sample traditional German cuisine, and many of the InterNations members like to do so together after meeting through our extensive global community. In fact, with over 1 million members, we are the largest global online community for expatriates to network and socialize, and share information.

Moving to Remscheid

Expatriates planning on moving to Remscheid will be pleased to hear that the city is well connected to the rest of the Rhineland and beyond by train and road. The Belgian and Dutch borders are not far from Remscheid and reaching the metropolitan cities of Bonn, Cologne, and Duesseldorf is easy. There are two nearby airports serving Remscheid - the Duesseldorf International Airport and the Cologne Airport - both of which are roughly 30 kilometers away. Three smaller airports encircle the city, but these are rarely used by traveling expats. While the area has always benefited from a modest amount of tourism, an increasing number of expatriates looking to settle in the Ruhr area are finding the city of Remscheid a worthy destination. If you are thinking of moving to Remscheid yourself, have a browse through the InterNations Expat Magazine for helpful tips and advice on life abroad or simply get information from fellow expatriates via InterNations.
