Start Your New Life as an Expat in Namibia
Most expats will head for the capital, Windhoek, which serves as the economic, political and cultural center of Namibia. In this beautiful country, often called “Africa for beginners”, expats can join the tourist trail to observe majestic African animals in their natural habitat, or shop at the three shopping malls in Windhoek. Sports fans will find that football, rugby, cricket and inline hockey are all popular. Expats often settle in expat compounds, with pools, spacious interiors and security systems. Namibia has a high unemployment rate, so it’s unsurprising that the government encourages the employment of locals over expats. It’s therefore advisable to obtain employment before relocating, in order to get the required visa. Mining and in particular diamond mining is a major contributor to Namibia’s industry, as well as gold, silver and uranium. In the cities, construction and manufacturing are improving transportation links, but tourism is the biggest industry and source of employment, with beautiful wildlife and expansive national parks attracting visitors.
InterNations is the largest global network for expatriates, with communities in 420 cities around the world.
