Lomé is classified as a low-income country. It has a number of taxation rates. The social security contribution rate is currently 17.5%, which is based on a gross salary and deducted in monthly payments. Payroll or income tax is also deducted monthly and currently stands at 5% of the gross salary. Businesses pay a biannual premium of 0.2% of their taxable profit. Taxes are also levied on garbage collection and property and the current VAT rate is 18%. Expats should check with their own native taxation authority as to how they stand relating to tax when working in Lomé.
Job Hunting in Lomé
Most of the job vacancies in Lomé are related to the city’s main industry of export, although the tourism industry is growing and jobs are becoming more frequent in the sector. There are a number of private English schools in Lomé and a qualified TEFL teacher will usually be able to find work here. For expats this is a good option but you will need to get your TEFL or TESOL certificate before you arrive. Most of these jobs are recruited outside of Lomé so the internet is the best place to start looking if teaching English is what you have in mind. Jobs in Lomé can be searched online or in local newspapers. There is no official labor bureau in the city of Lomé.

The retirement age in Togo is currently 60 years. The scheme, or C.N.S.S, does not cover unemployment but is designed to supplement healthcare and provide for old age and disability. Only those who are employed are covered by the scheme. If you are an expat in Lomé, then insurance is probably a better way for you. Remember that Togo is a developing country and there is still some catching up to do.
