Local Economy

Leipzig’s nickname as ‘Hypezig’ or the Boomtown of eastern Germany has developed in recent years as the local economy becomes stronger in more areas. Software companies such as Spreadshirt and Unister have bases in the city, which has a growing reputation as a tech hub.

The University of Leipzig is one of the biggest employers in the city and it is currently being renovated in order to mark the 600th anniversary of the institution.

Leipzig is a city in the middle of regeneration and this means there are a lot of opportunities for expats in the construction sector, while the city’s tourism industry is becoming more developed by the year as the city’s improving reputation attracts people from all over the world.

Job Hunting in Leipzig

The Federal Employment Agency is the main German job portal and this is a good starting point for anyone who wants to start working in Leipzig. The Make it in Germany job exchange is also a good place to find jobs in Leipzig, while positions in the city may be advertised on major job sites.

Leipziger Volkszeitung is the city’s only daily newspaper and may also be worth checking out for foreigners considering moving to Leipzig.

Qualified technical workers, including engineers and IT specialists, are currently in demand across Germany and there is also a shortage of health professionals in the country.

Work Permits in Leipzig

Any resident of the EU can live and work in Leipzig without needing a visa or a work permit.

The new German Immigration Act means that highly qualified persons can now be granted permanent residence and permission to work in the country, rather than for a period of just five years as was previously the case. To secure this, foreigners moving to Leipzig must have a concrete job offer, while they also must get permission from the German Employment Agency.

Family members can also obtain the right to work in Germany too, with the country making a concerted effort to encourage highly skilled people to move to Germany.
