Calcutta: India's East Coast Jewel
Calcutta or as it's now known, Kolkata, is the former capital city of India and its nickname — The City of Furious, Creative Energy — should sum up everything you need to know. Its culture is rich with dance, art, music, and film. The local Bengali cuisine, as you would expect, is fragrant and flavorful: try the fish curries it's famous for, such as the jhol (fish cooked with a simple tomato or ginger sauce) or the shorshe batar jhal (a spicy, heady mix of mustard and green chillies). The nightlife in Calcutta is vibrant and popular, from classy cocktail and jazz bars to nightclubs. Housing in the city is cheap, traffic sometimes hectic, but as the city is relatively small, getting around shouldn't be a problem. Your fellow InterNations expats will be able to give you advice as to what medical facilities are available; there are many good hospitals in the city. Calcutta is a friendly, safe city and you will soon settle into your new life in this most beautiful of places.
