Afterwork-Vinotheque-Evening - Schlemmerwochen Special
Straußwirtschaft - since Charlemagne
You wouldn't believe what Charlemagne (April Protected content 814), who conquered and ruled a large empire, was involved with on the side from his palatinate in Ingelheim.
He not only planted vineyards, but also made sure that the wine reached the people.
To this end, he invented the Straußwirtschaft and immediately issued the necessary regulations, including the wreath or bouquet in front of the door, which has survived from the Middle Ages along with this winegrower-friendly institution despite many prohibitions due to "Mißbräuchlicher Völlerey (abusive gluttony)".
These medieval regulations included the fact that wine could only be served when the "wine bell" rang at the end of the day or on Sundays after mass, that dissolute persons could not be employed "to maintain morality" and that only wine harvested by the winegrower himself could be tapped in his own rooms.
As early as Protected content , a decree prohibited hot food and only allowed "what may be roasted on the grill for drinking".
This is still the case today: "Handkäs mit Musik", "Spundekäs", "Worschtebrot" and "Winzerteller" are hearty accompaniments to wine.
