Movie Night at TIFF: La Cocina

If you can’t stand the heat, get out of one of Manhattan’s biggest kitchens in this nerve-jangling tragicomedy.
Alonso Ruizpalacios’ frantic drama focuses on the kitchen of a Manhattan tourist trap during a particularly busy lunch rush, when tensions have reached a boiling point.
After the restaurant’s accountant discovers cash missing from the till, the manager questions kitchen staff, a group of mostly undocumented workers already teetering on the edge of their precarious employment. The prime suspect, Pedro (Raúl Briones), already has a lot on his plate — he’s hoping to “become legal” with the restaurant owner’s help, in addition to navigating a very complicated relationship with American server Julia (Rooney Mara).
In his highly-stylized exploration of complex personalities under the crushing grind of dehumanizing labour, Ruizpalacios turns out “one of the year’s freshest films” (Los Angeles Times).
Look forward to seeing you there!
