Let’s attend the discussion with Ivan Krastev and Philipp Blom.

„There is a widespread feeling that the early 21st century, our own time, is torn between two world orders, one decaying, the other not yet established, or not yet understood. The crises of Western democracies, increasing polarisation, a new aristocracy of the super rich, populist revolts against all kinds of elites and the return of widespread political violence, are symptomatic of powerful forces tearing apart a world that seemed stable. What fuels this? How important are migration, economic globalisation, new wars and alliances, digitisation, smartphones, and AI in this mix?

Ivan Krastev grew up in a time of revolution in Bulgaria and has made it his life’s work to understand what drives them and how to protect and encourage liberty in a rule-based order. Series host Philipp Blom is fascinated by turning points in history and believes that our present may be the biggest of them all.

Ivan Krastev, chairman of the Centre for Liberal Strategies, Sofia, and Permanent Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna (IWM)

Philipp Blom, historian and author of several novels, journalism, politics, and philosophy”

We will meet at MQ where the staircase to Leopoldmuseum starts, at 5.30pm. In case you arrive later please find us inside MQ Libelle.

Looking forward,

Before the concert we will meet at Cafe am Heumarkt at 6pm for a coffee/drink. If you arrive later you can also join directly for the concert.

“As one of the most lyrical voices in contemporary jazz piano, Brad Mehldau has forged a path that embodies the essence of jazz, classical romanticism and pop. Mehldau has received numerous awards - as a bandleader and also for his collaboration with greats such as Pat Metheny, Renée Fleming and Joshua Redman. In his forays into a wide range of musical idioms - both as a trio and as a soloist - he brilliantly rearranged songs by contemporary songwriters such as the Beatles, Cole Porter, Radiohead, Paul Simon, Gershwin and Nick Drake; In addition, Mehldau continued to expand his own oeuvre of original compositions. With his preference for popular music and his classical training, Mehldau is, according to The New York Times, one of the most influential jazz pianists of the last 20 years. The superstar graces the Vienna Konzerthaus with his trio.”

The concert starts at 7.30pm. From Cafe Heumarkt we will proceed to the Konzerthaus in a 5min walk.

Looking forward seeing you at the concert,
