Historical Walk "VIa Giulia" & Aperitivo
VIA GIULIA
January 6. 3 pm - via acciaioli Protected content San Giovanni dei fiorentini
In the Middle Ages, Via Giulia was an important road artery, so much so that it was called "Via Magistralis" because it was considered a main road, even if it was tortuous and muddy as it was subject to floods from the Tiber. In Protected content IV della Rovere, in the city's reorganization plan, renovated this street which in the meantime had been called "Via Mercatoria" because it connected the area with high financial potential with the markets of Campo de' Fiori and Piazza Navona. But it was in Protected content Pope Julius II della Rovere designed, with Bramante, the first and longest straight road in Rome (1 km) (so much so that it was also called "Via Recta"), called "Strada Julia" from the name of the pontiff. The most important "coats of arms" of the time were aligned along this road, from the Sacchetti to the Ricci and Chigi families, testifying to the considerable importance of the road. The construction of the Tiber walls, which took place after Protected content , distorted the most characteristic aspect of the street: the houses along the river disappeared, the buildings were downsized or eliminated, as happened with the so-called "Palazzo dei Centopreti", which once the fountain today in Piazza Trilussa was placed as a valuable backdrop to the street.
