Lou Ye’s international breakthrough reworks elements of Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo on the streets of Shanghai. Along the industrial banks of the Suzhou River, a young videographer, Marda (Jia Hongsheng), falls in love with a beautiful woman named Moudan (Zhou Xun). When she suddenly disappears, Marda meets a femme fatale at a nightclub who bears an uncanny resemblance to his vanished flame.
