Marco Stanley Fogg, an orphan, is raised by his Uncle Victor. When he reaches college age, he attends Columbia University in New York City. After moving from a college dormitory to his own apartment, Marco inherits a collection of Protected content from Uncle Victor. Unfortunately, Uncle Victor passes away before Marco finishes college, leaving him without friends or family.
Struggling to survive, Marco sells the books one by one and eventually loses his apartment. He seeks refuge in Central Park, where he meets Kitty Wu. After being rescued by Zimmer and Kitty, Marco begins a romance with her. Later, he becomes a caretaker for an elderly man named Thomas Effing.
During this time, Marco learns about the complicated history of his parents and discovers that Effing was previously known as the painter Julian Barber.
The novel beautifully intertwines Marco’s personal quest with historical events, making it a thought-provoking and memorable read.
