From Ground Zero
The only screening of a Palestinian Oscar nominee. Twenty-two short stories straight from the Gaza Strip.
Young Palestinian filmmakers, including both debutants and experienced filmmakers, show in their creative documentaries, animations and hybrid forms a reality different from the one we know from media reports. Many of them impress with their unparalleled craftsmanship. Some may appear naïve, but the formal austerity enforced by the conditions is balanced by the authenticity of the images and emotions. Whether devoted to the suffering of a community or to individual problems, they give us the opportunity to see with our own eyes what the inhabitants of besieged cities live - what are they afraid of, how do they cope with hunger, lack of water and medicine, childcare? Is it possible to convey their perspective to the world through cinema? ‘Zone Zero’ is a feverish attempt to draw the world's attention to the situation of people trying to live despite having lost control of their destiny.
The screening will be preceded by an introduction Protected content given by Ala Qandil - a Polish-Palestinian reporter and former PAP correspondent in Palestine/Israel. Qandil has worked, among others, with Al Jazeera, ‘Le Monde Diplomatique Polska’, WP.pl. She publishes in ‘Polityka’ and runs the Polish-Palestinian Justice Initiative ‘Kaktus’ at the Nomada Association.
