Of Sea and Stars: A History of Celestial Navigation is being held in collaboration with Professor Joseph Caruana from the University of Malta’s Department of Physics and the Institute of Space Sciences & Astronomy.
Prof. Caruana will be telling the story of how the celestial intersected with the maritime in myriad cultures over a great many centuries, enabling powerful navy’s to roam the seas, empires to expand their reach, and incredible stories to be recorded. From mythology to science, from works of art to fascinating navigational instruments, this talk will unravel the tale of one of the most formidable problems in exploration.
Professor Joseph Caruana is a physicist & astrophysicist who completed his B.Sc. in physics & mathematics at the University of Malta and his PhD in astrophysics at the University of Oxford. He has worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik in Germany and now lectures at the University of Malta, focusing on optics, astrophysics, cosmology & the philosophy of science. His research interests include the early universe, galaxy formation, light pollution, & hyperbaric medicine. Prof. Caruana is a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and a member of several prestigious scientific societies.
