Let’s have a delicious dinner with the best Mediterranean food in the Houston area and celebrate a French tradition together: la galette des rois or the French King Cake. It is delicious, you won’t regret it!

A little bit of context: The French King Cake, known as “Galette des Rois”, is a traditional pastry eaten in France to celebrate Epiphany on January 6th. Here’s a breakdown of the tradition:

The Cake Itself
•In northern France, the Galette des Rois is made of puff pastry filled with frangipane (a rich almond cream).
•In southern France, a different version called “Gâteau des Rois” is more common—it’s a brioche-style cake with candied fruits.

The Hidden Charm (“La Fève”)
•A small figurine, called “la fève”, is hidden inside the cake. Originally, this was a bean, but today, it’s often a porcelain or plastic figurine.
•The person who finds the fève in their slice is crowned King or Queen for the day and wears a golden paper crown (which is usually included with store-bought galettes).

The Tradition of Serving
•The cake is usually cut into as many slices as there are guests.
•A traditional custom is that the youngest person sits under the table and calls out who gets each slice—ensuring fairness in distributing the fève.

When It’s Eaten
•While traditionally eaten on January 6th, many families and offices enjoy it throughout January.
