Upcoming Activities

Sat 12:45

The Finlandia Hall open its doors on Saturday, January 25th.

For adults, there will be interesting lectures and discussions exploring the building’s history and its iconic features. Guides from the Aalto Foundation will lead you inside the hall, reveal its secrets, and explain what the renovation brought with it. The entire program is completely free! (Except for the coat check services)

The new Protected content will be open, so you can also do some delicious shopping and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

In the Helsinki Hall, there will be discussions and memories about Finlandia Hall:
Lecture 1: 12:00 PM–1:00 PM / Finlandia Hall, Helsinki’s Iconic Landmark
Lecture 2: 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM / I Love the Human in You

You can also join guided tours by the Aalto Foundation. Sign up one hour before the tour at the Finlandia Hall service desk. Tours depart from the service desk at:

11:00 AM
2:00 PM
4:00 PM

Each tour accommodates the first 30 registrants.

Seems like the lectures may only be in Finnish (I will then skip them).

I will therefore try to be there a bit before 13:00 in an attempt to book a place for the tour of 14.00.

With only 30 participants allowed/tour, it is going to be busy. Be on time! ;-)

Birds, suns, ships in the sky and fairytale castles: the fantasy imagery of Danish artist Carl-Henning Pedersen Protected content will take over the museum in autumn Protected content . Pedersen, who had a long career, was one of the most important artists of Danish modernism. He also belonged to the important international CoBrA group. The Fairytales of Carl-Henning Pedersen brings together key themes from Pedersen's career in the most comprehensive exhibition of the artist's work in Finland.

Carl-Henning Pedersen, who began his career in the late Protected content , was one of the most important modernists in Danish visual art. A self-taught and spontaneous artist, he had a distinctive visual style and used the term “fantasy art” to describe his work. His expressive artworks depict imaginative birds, masks, winged horses, ships in the sky and celestial objects. Pedersen was interested in prehistoric and medieval imagery and indigenous art. He drew his inspiration from works created by children as well as from the dream world. The common human imagination and shared myths play an important role in the artist's imagery and writings. Particularly in his early works, one can find parallels with works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Paul Klee, among others.

The hospitals of the HUS Helsinki University Hospital are filled with visual art. Paintings, sculptures, and graphic works are spread throughout entrance halls, waiting rooms, department corridors, and patient rooms.

The extensive HUS art collection will be showcased at Kunsthalle Helsinki towards the end of the year. Reflecting the nature of the collection, the exhibition will focus on works by artists living in Finland and the Baltic Sea region. The exhibition includes works from both young creators and established artists. Artists featured include Juhana Blomstedt, Kari Cavén, Outi Heiskanen, Pentti Kaskipuro, Kaisu Koivisto, Essi Kuokkanen, Leonhard Lapin, Tiitus Petäjäniemi, Pentti Sammallahti, Mari Sunna, Suvi Sysi, Marjatta Tapiola, Anna Tuori, Miina Äkkijyrkkä and Viggo Wallensköld. The curator of the exhibition is art historian Markku Valkonen.

Art Prolongs Life is more than a diverse art exhibition; it is a statement on the significance of art in conditions where a person’s health requires care and attention.

There is good reason for including art in hospital premises: encountering art promotes well-being. Considerable and convincing scientific evidence supports its positive impact on health and wellness. In hospitals, art can also encourage one to see the diversity of life and the existence of different emotions; the works remind us that no one is alone, and that others have experienced similar feelings and events.

Tove Jansson – Paradise

Protected content 's major exhibition presents Tove Jansson's commissioned works for public spaces, where the artist's goal was to create beauty and joy of life around her and to provide ingredients for the world of stories. Spread over two floors, the complex fills half of Protected content 's exhibition space and presents more than Protected content and objects, including never-before-seen sketches.

At 17:00, for those interested, let's see a documentary:

The documentary film tells about the dramatic fire of the old church in Teuva and the construction of the new church, and opens up the backgrounds of the altar painting made by Jansson. Through Jansson's letters and entries in the workbook, we follow the creation of the work and the artist's thoughts about the painting process. The film also shows other monumental works of the artist. The memories of contemporaries and archival material paint a picture of Jansson as an artist and at the same time tell about the atmosphere of post-war Finland.

The paintings of Jarmo Mäkilä (b. Protected content one of the most significant painters of his generation and has had many selves, also as an artist. His realistic paintings are mental landscapes. They are metaphorical worlds that include all of his selves, from knee-high boy to the threshold of adulthood, plus alternative presents and futures, real and imagined. The central themes of the works, which evoke conflicting and strong emotions, are the development of the self and the importance of memories and the subconscious.

“Things are not what they seem,” says Jarmo Mäkilä. “A picture is not what you see, but what it awakens in you and what is behind it. A person lives, in a way, two lives: external and internal. One is hidden and the other is visible. I am trying to engage with my hidden life.”
