Anora, OmU GOLDEN PALM in Cannes
What Baker has created here is nothing short of pure movie magic— his smartly interwoven urban machinations make you giggle and inexplicably tear up on repeat (sometimes within the same sequence), while somehow keeping you acutely aware of the sorrow that is bound to rise to the surface.
It's actually a Cinderella story that Baker presents us with and older generations will probably be reminded of PRETTY WOMAN. The difference is that Baker replaces all the kitsch with speed, joie de vivre and ecstasy. His feel-good comedy not only thrives on the youthful age of its protagonists, but also on their hunger for life and their willingness to enjoy their happiness here and now without thinking about any consequences. This makes ANORA a crowdpleaser of the highest calibre, because who among us wouldn't want to experience a love affair like this? As incredible as the goings-on are at times, Baker manages to bring the film back down to earth in a matter-of-fact way and, Cinderella or not, you never feel like you're watching a fairy tale.
It's a very small cinema, only 29 seats, so you might want to reserve online.
Let's meet in downstairs foyer to sort out tickets and snacks, film starts at 21h00
See you at the movies!
