Tour of Santa María la Ribera and the Tradition of Burning Judas Effigies

Join us on a cultural walking tour through Santa María la Ribera, one of Mexico City’s most charming and historic neighborhoods. Known for its eclectic architecture, peaceful tree-lined streets, and vibrant local culture, this neighborhood offers a unique glimpse into the city’s past and present.

We will visit important buldings and streets in the magical neighborhood and the iconic Kiosko Morisco, a stunning 19th-century iron gazebo located in the heart of the neighborhood’s central plaza. From there, we’ll explore historic mansions, local markets, and hidden gems, while learning about the area’s rich architectural and cultural heritage.

A highlight of this tour is experiencing the traditional Burning of Judas ("Quema de Judas"), a deeply rooted Mexican Holy Week celebration. In this colorful and dramatic ritual, large papier-mâché effigies, often representing Judas Iscariot or modern-day symbols of corruption and injustice, are filled with fireworks and set ablaze. This symbolic act represents the triumph of good over evil and has become a powerful form of artistic and social expression.

You’ll meet local artisans who craft these explosive figures by hand, and witness how this centuries-old tradition continues to evolve with creativity, satire, and community spirit.
