Visiting Shrine in Kamakura on New Year's Day
The public transportation is running overnight on the New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
Hatsumoude is a Japanese New Year's tradition of visiting a Shinto shrine or Buddhist temple for the first time in the new year. It's a significant part of Japanese culture and is typically performed on one of the first three days of the year. People tend to express gratitude for the previous year and
pray for safety and peace in the new year.
Other fun things to do there are:
ーBuy a talisman or evil-warding arrow, called a hamaya
ーReturn the previous year's talisman and hamaya
ーDrink sake, which is said to ward off misfortune
ーBuy good luck charms called omamori
ーDraw a fortune paper called an omikuji
