Facts about Expat Life and the Local Economy in Nice

With a population of 340,000 inhabitants, the capital of Côte d'Azur is the fifth-largest city in France. Located on the Mediterranean, Nice has some of the best weather in all of France, with more than 250 days of sunshine a year. Known as La Belle, this city on the French Riviera offers many exciting intercultural experiences for expats. From the busy touristy palm-lined Promenade des Anglais, following the curve of the Baie des Anges beaches, to the rustic local markets on the Cours Saleya that dot the city, shopping in Nice can be lots of fun. The Old Town of Nice, Vieille Ville, offers lots of beautiful narrow streets full of small cafes and bistros where you can relax and enjoy the marvelous landscape. France's Bastille Day offers a great chance for Nice expats to party like only the French can, and every weekend there's a rich nightlife to be explored in the city. Music lovers will enjoy the jazz scene, and attending Nice's famous annual jazz festival. For those who are looking for something more extravagant, Nice Carnival is the perfect event. It is one of the largest and most spectacular festivals in the world where you can see dancers, acrobats, street performers, and huge figures on floats, designed to complement the Carnival's theme. Expats searching for a break from learning French can take in an English film or two at the city's Pathé-Masséna cinema. Economically, the city is strong and while unemployment is low, many working-age expats say it's easy to find work in the fields of engineering, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and the city's thriving tourism industry. When you start searching for accommodation, you should be aware that apartments located in the old town, the center, and close to the port of the city are expensive. However, most of the flats and studios are well furnished, with central heating and wonderful views, from where you can enjoy the sunrise and the sea.
